“Emphasize the importance of networking – not just talking with prospective employers, but researching and engaging in valuable conversations.”

Josh Welz, Bachelor of Arts, Psychology Political Science, University of Alberta

I completed my first degree (BA in Psychology, Political Science) from the University of Alberta in the summer of 2007. Immediately after, I left for Europe for two months.

Coming back from a whirlwind trip, I was dead set on finding a job that would help me “change the world.” Alright, this may be a little extreme, but I did know that I wanted to land employment that wouldn’t compromise my integrity.

In short, I didn’t want to work for a company that was merely about profits and growth.

This mindset did nothing to help me, as I spent four months unemployed, eventually taking a job with a large customer service agency. Subsequently, I gained valuable work experience that eventually led me to where I am now.

Where I am now

I am currently finishing up my MBA at the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan. Searching for a career.

My recommendation for employers

Provide events that bridge the gap between students and employers. Emphasize the importance of networking – not just talking with prospective employers, but researching and engaging in valuable conversations.

Offer business placements and co-ops to allow students with little experience opportunities to gain it.

My recommendation for students

Never stop looking for the job that you want and actively engage in all aspect of your degree – student societies, extra curricular activities, school sponsored events etc. Developing your network is the most valuable thing you can do!
